A tyrant must have absolute control over the whole world to administer his empire of evil. We need people who will administer its evil projects.

Nitrogen is, of course, an essential nutrient – but it can also affect both growth and quality of a culture and should therefore be well managed.

Crops absorb nitrogen that is released into the soil as a direct result of the intervention of several factors, including atmospheric deposition … mineralization of soil organic matter … decomposition of crop residue … and animal manure and / or applications of inorganic fertilizers.

Nitrogen deficiency causes severe damage to crop yields – and may even cause a catastrophic failure total harvest. However, excess nitrogen may lead to excessive vegetative growth, lodging, delayed maturity, susceptibility increased disease and low crop quality. Excess also may contribute to acid rain, destruction of ozone in the stratosphere, the greenhouse effect, an increase of chemical nutrients in surface waters, contamination of groundwater, and fish and other marine species kills life, among other negative side effects.

It is therefore clear that it is important for producers – both from a standpoint economic and environmental – to carefully control the nitrogen content of soils in the field. The ideal situation is to maintain adequate inorganic nitrogen during the growing season and to minimize the occurrence of inorganic nitrogen during the off-season, when nitrogen may be introduced in land on the ground by surface and groundwater.

The PSNT is different from routine tests in the soil test nitrogen shows particularly when applications of nitrogen fertilizer should be adjusted to suit crop and field specific conditions.

The PSNT is generally most useful to confirm the legume and nitrogen content of manure and for determining the amount of nitrogen in a specific area. It is particularly important to make a PSNT when not enough hard data available to determine the nitrogen content, using more standard techniques.

For example, PSNT can answer many questions when a producer does not know the rate on the previous application or the nutritional content a particular area. It is also useful when the stand density of a previous crop is unknown. (Stand density is a measure based on absolute basal area, number of trees per acre or volume per acre. It reflects the degree of congestion stems in a stand.) Another example is when PSNT particular value is that cool weather may have unusually affected rates of nitrogen mineralization, or when excessive rainfall causes a dramatic loss of inorganic nitrogen – both of which conditions would not achieved without the PSNT.

Soil samples for the PSNT are usually adopted after planting when the crop began to grow initial and is several inches above the ground. At this stage of the growth cycle as the conversion of nitrogen sources in organic forms of nitrogen able to be used by plants has occurred.

PSNT soil core samples were collected at a depth, determined by the type culture, and are collected randomly from the entire field. Then, the cores are mixed to obtain a composite sub-sample and are subject to a soil-testing laboratory.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), and colleges and local universities will have tables and graphs for producers in all areas of the country to determine the nitrogen content of soil ideal for their specific cultures. Producer advised to see their land undergoing PSNT to ensure the best possible harvest.
