Tacky to request a letter of reference by e-mail?

I am a college grad and need references from my teachers. I really pressed for time, and to send a letter which I am in the U.S. take about 7-10 days. Is it just tacky to ask a former professor (I know more or less) via e-mail if it is willing to be a professional reference for me, and then say I'll send all my forms by mail as soon as possible? I am a little afraid to ask, but it was kind teacher, because I sent another letter to a teacher I thought it would help me, but she reacted very violently and said I was out of line asking for his help (I think she is schizophrenic.) I did not have to know a lot of my teachers and language because at the time I was working, taking 18 credits, and commuting. AHHHH! I need references for a job, and I began to despair!

It would be better to ask person, and better to call, especially if there is no doubt that person remember who you are and why you are fabulous enough to merit a letter of recommendation. However, If you can not afford to call now, write an e-mail explaining your situation concisely unusual, updating the teacher about what you've done since college, and respectfully asks for a recommendation. Have a plan B (plan C?) In mind if it does not work … especially if the teacher is the kind that zillions of emails and do not always respond right away. Good luck!
